GRATITUDE IS OUR CALLING, THE POWER OF THANKSGIVING
“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18.
This verse doesn’t say “give thanks for everything,” but “in everything.” That means even in hardship, uncertainty, and waiting, we are called to give thanks, not because the situation is good, but because God is.
Thanksgiving is more than a holiday, it is a holy posture. In a world filled with complaints, comparisons, and chaos, God calls His people to live with grateful hearts. Thanksgiving is not just a response to blessings; it is a command, a lifestyle, and a spiritual weapon. When we give thanks, we acknowledge God’s goodness, shift our focus from lack to abundance, and invite His peace into our lives.
IN THIS BRIEF LESSON I WANT TO TAKE TIME TO SHARE WITH YOU, THAT GIVING THANKS TO GOD CAN CHANGE THE DYNAMICS TO ANY PART OF YOUR LIFE.
I. WHY THANKSGIVING MATTERS
1. Thanksgiving Honors God “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.” — Psalm 100:4. Gratitude is the gateway to God’s presence. It shifts our hearts from entitlement to worship.
2. Thanksgiving Strengthens Faith “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” — Philippians 4:6. When we mix our prayers with thanksgiving, we release anxiety and receive peace. Gratitude reminds us of what God has already done, building confidence in what He will do.
3. Thanksgiving Aligns Us with God’s Will “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God…” Gratitude is not optional, it is obedience. It aligns our hearts with heaven and keeps us spiritually grounded.
II. WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR?
Are you thankful for salvation?
For breath in your body?
For family, even if imperfect?
For lessons learned through trials?
For the grace that met you in your lowest valley?
Gratitude is not just for the mountaintop, it’s for the valley. It’s for the journey. It’s for the moments when we don’t understand, but we still trust.
III. THANKSGIVING RELEASES BLESSINGS
Romans 8:28 reminds us: “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” When we dedicate our lives to God and to the well-being of our families, we step into divine order. Gratitude becomes the evidence of our trust. It opens the door for God to work all things together for good.
IV. PRACTICAL POINT
a. Start a gratitude journal. Write down three things you’re thankful for each day.
b. Make thanksgiving part of your prayer life. Begin every prayer with praise.
c. Speak gratitude aloud. Let your words reflect your faith.
d. Teach your family to give thanks. Create a culture of gratitude in your home.
CONCLUSION: Thanksgiving is not just a feeling, it’s a decision. It’s a declaration that God is good, even when life is hard. When we give thanks, we don’t just honor God, we strengthen ourselves, encourage others, and shift the atmosphere around us.
PRAYER: Lord, teach us to be thankful in all things. Help us to see Your hand in every season. May our hearts overflow with gratitude, and may our lives reflect Your goodness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
