PRESS THE MUTE BUTTON

I was sitting at a table in Panera Bread, trying to gather my thoughts, when the noise of the world came crashing in. My ABC News app sent an alert, another school shooting. My social media accounts lit up with commentary about the church, some of it thoughtful, much of it divisive. My phone rang again, another scam call, the twelfth one that hour (though it felt like the 1,200th). And the list kept going. The noise was relentless. The issues before all of us have become so loud, so constant, that they begin to drown out the still, small voice of the Lord. It’s not just the headlines, it’s the heartbreak, the confusion, the spiritual fatigue. Just like you, it’s easy to become overwhelmed.

But in that moment, I did something simple. I reached for my device and pressed the mute button. And then, I prayed. I didn’t pray for the noise to stop, I prayed for direction. Because the mute button isn’t just a tech feature; it’s a spiritual discipline. It’s the intentional silencing of the world so we can hear the whisper of Heaven.

Scripture reminds us: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Stillness is not weakness, it is wisdom. It is the posture of a soul that refuses to be ruled by chaos. The Apostle Paul wrote, “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair” (2 Corinthians 4:8). That’s the tension we live in, surrounded by trouble, yet sustained by grace.

When the world gets loud, we must get quiet. When the alerts keep coming, we must retreat into prayer. When the commentary becomes toxic, we must return to truth. And when the phone won’t stop ringing, we must remember that Heaven is always listening.

So today, use the mute button. Not just on your device, but on your spirit. Silence the distractions. Quiet the panic. And listen for the voice of the Lord. He’s still speaking. He’s still guiding. And He’s still faithful.

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”  John 10:27.

So today, when the noise of the world grows deafening, when alerts, opinions, and interruptions threaten to drown out the voice of God, reach for the mute button. Not just on your device, but on your spirit. Silence the distractions. Quiet the chaos. And listen for the whisper of Heaven.

Let us pray:

Heavenly Father, In a world overflowing with noise, we come to You seeking stillness. Teach us to mute the voices that confuse, distract, and overwhelm. Help us to hear Your voice above the clamor of culture, crisis, and commentary. We ask for Your peace, Your clarity, and Your direction. Let Your Word be louder than the world. Let Your Spirit guide us in truth. And let Your presence be our refuge.

We declare today: “Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth.”  1 Samuel 3:9.   And we rest in the promise: “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”  Isaiah 26:3.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
