To every Minister of every rank and file, every Deacon and Deaconess, every State and Local Official, and to our beloved Family and Friends of the North Carolina Diocese, both here in our great state and across the globe, we pause on this final Sunday of February to celebrate you. This is a time set aside during Black History Month to honor those who came before us, reflect upon those who stand among us, and pray for those who will rise to lead in generations yet to come. (Hebrews 12:1)

Today, we stand on the shoulders of giants. We remember Harriet Tubman, whose courage carved pathways to freedom; Frederick Douglass, whose voice thundered against injustice; Sojourner Truth, who declared the dignity of womanhood and the humanity of the oppressed; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who dared to dream of a world shaped by justice and love; Rosa Parks, whose quiet strength ignited a movement; and Thurgood Marshall, who transformed the legal landscape of this nation. Their sacrifices were not for themselves alone, they were seeds planted for a harvest we now enjoy. (Psalm 145:4)
We also honor Mother Mary L. Tate, founder of the Church of the Living God, Inc., commonly known as The House of God Church, Keith Dominion. We thank God for her unwavering devotion to advancing all humanity to a higher plane in God and within ourselves. Her vision, courage, and spiritual insight established a foundation that continues to shape lives across generations and across the world. (Proverbs 31:31)
We further honor Bishop R. A. R. Keith, Bishop A. B. Jenkins, Bishop J. D. Elliott, and Bishop S. P. Fletcher, past leaders of this great church, who labored tirelessly for the progression of the call of Christ. Their commitment to girdling the globe for the Kingdom of God ensured that the message of holiness, love, and righteous living would reach far beyond the borders of this nation. (1 Corinthians 15:58)
And we respect the seat of the 6th in historical succession, Bishop James I. Butler, Sr., whose work to bring back the love strengthened the heart of the church and renewed the bonds of fellowship among the saints. (John 13:34–35)
Yet Black History Month is not only a tribute to African American heritage. It is a global reminder of every people, every culture, and every nation that has fought, and continues to fight, for freedom, dignity, and human rights. From the struggles against apartheid in South Africa to the cries for liberty in nations across the world, this month calls us to remember that the pursuit of freedom is universal. (Galatians 5:1)
Regardless of your station in life, your background, or your cultural digest, we thank you. Each of you has contributed to the advancement of a people once pushed to the margins but now standing with strength, resilience, and undeniable impact. Your prayers, your service, your leadership, and your unwavering faith have helped move the cause of justice and equality forward. (Micah 6:8)
Here in the North Carolina Diocese, we lift our voices in gratitude and intercession. We pray for the diversity of the nations. We pray for unity among all people. We pray for leaders who will rise with integrity, compassion, and courage. And we pray that the legacy of those who fought before us will continue to inspire us to walk boldly into the future God has prepared. (Revelation 7:9)
As we close this month of remembrance, celebration, and reflection, may we carry its lessons into every day that follows. May we honor the past, serve faithfully in the present, and prepare the way for those who will come after us. And may the God of all nations strengthen our hands, enlarge our vision, and keep us united in purpose. (Psalm 90:17)
We celebrate you. We honor you. And we thank God for you, today and always. (Philippians 1:3)
Respectfully written,
Bishop Charlene M. Jamison
NCD Jurisdictional Prelate
