Be Open: Giving Back When It Counts

The life of a believer is one of openness—an open heart, an open hand, and an open spirit. Jesus Christ calls His followers to be vessels of mercy, extending love and grace to those in need, even when it is difficult. In Colossians 3:12, Paul encourages believers to "Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering." To have bowels of mercy means to be deeply moved with compassion, to let the love of Christ flow from the depths of our hearts to those around us.

Our openness should reflect the character of Jesus. First, we must open our hearts to forgiveness. Matthew 6:14 reminds us, "For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you." Holding onto bitterness closes the door to healing, but when we forgive, we allow God's grace to work in us and through us.

Next, we must open our hearts to love—even for those who mistreat us. Jesus Himself said in Matthew 5:44, "But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you." Love is not reserved for those who treat us well; it is a command to reflect Christ, regardless of how others behave.

Charity is also a form of openness. In 1 John 3:17, Scripture challenges us, "But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?" When we see a need and have the means to help, we should never shut ourselves off from being a blessing.

Being open is not just about what we do—it is about who we are. Like a restaurant that places an “Open” sign in the window to welcome customers, believers must shine as a beacon, ready to serve, ready to love, and ready to give. Jesus declared in Matthew 5:14-16, "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid... Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

Being open at all times means allowing God’s mercy to flow through us—giving love, extending forgiveness, and serving with compassion. Will you shine as a light for Christ, showing the world that you are open to share His love when it counts the most?
